Features to look out for when buying vehicle tracking devices

By Amy Jones

When buying vehicle tracking devices for your fleet, it is very important to choose your system very carefully. There is a huge range of different products available, and each has different features, functions and benefits. You need to find the tracking devices that perfectly meet the needs of your business, as well as the company budget.

Of the few key features you need to look out for in the fleet tracking systems you choose, one of the most important is reporting. You need a system that can offer you driver analysis reports as well as daily usage information for each of your vehicles.

Daily usage reports give you very useful and detailed information on the total travel times and total mileage for each vehicle, as well as the starting and ending points for each. Additionally, these reports tell you the maximum speed each vehicle has travelled during the day, and the amount of time the vehicle's engine has been idle or switched off.

Vehicle tracking systems can also generate similar reports on the behaviour of your drivers, and this is called driver analysis. You can look at the total time taken for breaks, how long each journey took and how fast the driver was going, then use this information to compare the efficiency of your drivers.

Another useful feature included in many vehicle tracking systems is integrated maps, which allow you to see the locations of all your vehicles on an interactive map. On this map, there may also be links to relevant reports, such as those mentioned previously, so you can more accurately monitor your fleet.

In case you are away from your desk, or even if you are travelling, you can use the mobile reporting feature offered by many vehicle tracking systems to check on the progress of your fleet. If you have an internet-enabled phone or other similar device, you can access live fleet reports on the move.
